Why we built Dudely: the AI tutor that actually teaches

Dudely is built by Syed Ryan Ahmed. This is the short version of why an answer is not the same as being taught.

The problem that would not go away

A student can now get an answer to almost any question in seconds. That sounds like the end of the struggle to learn. In practice it is not. Getting the answer and understanding the method are two different things, and only one of them shows up on the exam.

Watch how it usually goes. A student is stuck, asks an AI, gets a clean solution, copies it down, and feels done. Then the next problem, a small variation, stumps them all over again. They were handed a fish every night and never taught to fish. The tools got better at answering and no better at teaching.

What teaching actually looks like

Think about the best teacher you ever had. They did not read you the solution. They stood at a board, built the idea up piece by piece, watched your face, noticed the exact moment you got lost, and went back to that spot. They asked you to try one, caught your specific mistake, and fixed that. That loop, not the final answer, is where understanding comes from.

None of that survives in a wall of text. It needs a board you can watch fill in, a voice explaining as it goes, a finger pointing at the term in question, and something that actually checks whether it landed.

Why Dudely is built the way it is

So Dudely was built around teaching, not answering. It draws the explanation live on a whiteboard, move by move. It talks it through and points at each step. And it runs a mastery loop: you try, it diagnoses the precise gap, it re-teaches that gap, you retry, and it will not move on until you have got it.

The goal is not to be a smarter answer machine. It is to be the patient tutor at the board that most students never had, available any time, for any STEM topic they are stuck on.
